Content

Acupuncture on the highest level is based upon its underlying worldview. In ancient times, these ideas came from an integration of the medical teachings with the Way of Life teachings of the Dàodéjīng.Today, in spite of the flourishing of acupuncture everywhere around the globe, there is no place where this perspective can be found other than hidden away within the iconic aphorisms of the Dàodéjīng.

This worldview is defined in the Dàodéjīng through a simple organization of the terms used in the text, which can be defined as its Thematic Context. The five major aspects of the Thematic Context include:

  1. A definition of Dào as both Source and Path,
  2. A description of how Dào Manifests into the material world,
  3. A description of the Prenatal and Postnatal aspects of Human Nature and how they apply to Body/Mind/Spirit integration,
  4. A description of the Fragmentation of Dào within the human realm that leads to a general lack of Fulfillment as well as to the Confusion and Disorder of Suffering, Sickness, and Disease,
  5. How the wholeness and integrity of Humanity can be restored by understanding and applying the basic principles of the Dàodéjīng in everyday life.

Many ancient legends and myths will be woven through the fabric of these topics to recapitulate this worldview to empower us all in the attainment of One Peaceful World.

Introduction

The first two classes of the Introduction will discuss the fundamental concepts of the text including its cultural background, its relevance to acupuncture and Natural Healing, and begin the discussion of the Thematic Context by defining Dào as “Source. The second two classes will discuss the definition of Dào as “Path. They will also include Daoist conception of Human Nature including the Higher Virtue of the Dào in relation to one’s True Nature, which is Good, as well as the lower reactional virtues, which tend to be Evil because they throw the world into Confusion and Disorder. The third two classes will discuss the Fragmentation of Dào through Selfishness, Desire, Contention, Profit, Pride, Arrogance, Cleverness, Knowledge, and Force. They will also include a section on Returning to Dào and the vitally important Three Levels of Healing that result .
